September 2022
After the tragic demise of Cyrus Mistry, a change in the rules was made by our transport minister Nitin Gadkari. He has made seatbelts necessary for all passengers emphasizing the rear seats. This incident has sparked some questions & concerns for both Mercedes & the Indian highways and traffic rules. Let’s see some mandatory car rules you didn’t know about:
Using Handsfree Device For Calls
Indian traffic rules clearly say that usage of mobile phones while driving is a violation of the law. This is one of the common myths that using a hands-free device such as earphones or Bluetooth for attending calls is legal. Be it using it for calls or just checking email, it violates the rules.
Driving With a High beam
Driving with a high beam is helpful during the night on dark or rural roads with improper lighting, but many people always drive with a high beam. On interior city roads with two-way traffic, it really gets hard for the driver coming on the other side of the road. You can be fined for driving with a high beam all the time; it violates the traffic rules.
Seatbelts
Before the recent tragic incident, only the front seatbelts were necessary, but rear seats will also be considered after the latest notification. The government gave this rule a timeline of 3 days for implementation; seatbelts are now essential for the rear passengers as well.
Following traffic lights after 10 pm
Several accidents happen at night because people believe traffic lights need not be followed after 10 pm. Some traffic signals might shut down or go into blinker mode at night, but that does not mean they can be ignored.
Overtaking
We all have heard that overtaking is only allowed from the right, but it is not always applicable. In certain instances, if the car in front is taking a right turn, there will be ample space on the left through which you can overtake. Also, overtaking a vehicle around a bend, hill or object that affects visibility counts as a traffic rule violation.
