Tips to maintain your Car Tyres

March 2015
Having an eye on your tyre ensures safety.

Navnit Maruti Service Centre in Thane Mumbai Studies have shown that most of us forget the fact that tyres are the only point of contact between your vehicle and the road and how important it is to maintain tyres to ensure safety. That is why it’s very significant to protect the quality and performance of your tyres to shelter both your safety and your mobility. So they need to be in good working condition at all times to ensure your safety.

To avoid any problems, you must follow some of these few important care tips listed by Navnit Maruti Service Centre on tyre maintenance:

Inspect your Car tyre ‘Regularly’:
You must regularly have an inspection of your tyres as you may not always notice if one of your tyres has been damaged. Examine your tyres regularly for wear and any damage to avoid any sudden problems. Also, have a professional inspection of your car tyres every year.

Check your Car tyre air pressure:
Driving with improper tyre pressures can affect a vehicle’s handling and braking, particularly in wet conditions, and can seriously make you compromise your safety. Driving on severely under-inflated tyres can cause heat build-up and eventually a premature failure. You should always use the inflation recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. This information can be found in the owner's manual and often on a label located in the vehicle's doorjamb, inside the fuel hatch, or on the glove compartment door.

Things you should know while checking car pressure:

  • Inspect air pressure once a month and before long trips.
  • Always check the pressure when the tyres are "cold" at least three hours after the vehicle has been stopped and before it has been driven one mile. It's best to inflate your tyres in the morning.
  • Don't forget to check the spare tyre.
  • Replace valves when you buy new tyres.
  • Buy good quality valve caps that can contain the inflation air, should the core of the valve fail for any reason.
  • Purchase a good pressure gauge as public gauges at the gas station are often abused and unreliable.

Respect the load capacity:
Exceeding load capacity relative to the tyre’s load index can be dangerous. Tyres loaded beyond their maximum loads can build up excessive heat that may result in sudden tyre destruction and may cause road damage.

Driving at high speed can damage your tyre:
While speeding, tyres have greater a chance of being damaged by road hazards or heat build-up. High speeds can also contribute to a rapid air loss or even a sudden tyre explosion, which can cause the loss of control of the vehicle.

Rotation
Regular rotation extends the life of your tyres, saving you time and money in the long run. Each tyre and wheel is removed from your vehicle and moved to a different position. This ensures that all of the tyres wear evenly and last longer. If no period is specified in your owner's manual, the tyres should be rotated every 6,000-8,000 miles.

Alignment
In a general term, Alignment refers to the adjustment of a vehicle's front and rear suspension parts. Proper alignment ensures that your vehicle handles correctly and will help increase the life and performance of your tyres. The alignment of your vehicle can be knocked out of adjustment from daily impacts such as potholes and railroad crossings, or by more severe accidents.

You should have the alignment checked if:

  • You know you have hit something.
  • You see a wear pattern developing on the shoulders of the tyres.

Balancing
KEEP YOUR BALANCE FOR LONGER TYRE LIFE
Balancing helps prevent premature wear of your tyres and eliminates vibration. It also protects the suspension, steering system and bearings of your vehicle. Have your wheels balanced when a tyre is replaced, a balance weight is moved or removed, or you purchase new tyres. You’ll know a wheel is out of balance when one area is heavier or lighter than the rest.

This will cause:

  • Uneven and rapid tread wear
  • Vibration
  • More stress on front-end parts
  • Front-end parts to wear prematurely

Tread wear Indicators
All tyres have tread wear indicator bars at 2/32" of remaining tread. When the tread is worn down to 2/32" or where you can see the tread wear indicator bars on any section of you tyre, the tyre is worn out and should be replaced.

Habitual Driving
Don't speed. Excessive heat is generated when driving at high speeds. This heat increases the rate of tyre wear and reduces the tyre's durability.
Avoid fast turns on curves and around corners, and avoid fast starts and panic stops.
Don't ride on the edge of the pavement or drive over curbs, potholes, or other obstructions.
